A new publishing company had reached out asking if I could write a punky anthem for their music library. I love songwriting - for people, with people - don't get to do it as often as I'd like, so when it happens I get a burst of inspiration, usually have a song idea to start recording within a few minutes. Opening riff popped into my head, recorded it in mid July. Vocals can take a while for me sometimes, finding the lyrics that match the vibe of the song and fitting them into a melody that works. But when the moment arrives it comes together quickly. Busted out the vocals in early August, laid sampled drums and submitted it to the publisher, was called "Let Your Voice Be Heard". They felt it was too heavy, too metal, they were looking for something a little more uplifting, less inciting and aggressive, more bubble-gum, less venom. (Within hours I wrote and recorded a song "The Best Time Of My Life" - was one of those rare instances where a song happened with no struggle at all, was a precise fit for what they were looking for.)

Wasn't sure what to do with "Let Your Voice Be Heard" - was producing Poc's album in the studio (artist from Mexico, her debut album) and we'd often have a live video stream of the recording sessions as we were working. During a session I played my song for some feedback and everyone felt I should release it as my own. Sent the music to Dennis Leeflang and he busted out a killer drum track, and I started prepping it to be the August 'Song Of the Month'. Ahhh, but being in the home stretch of recording with Poc I really needed to focus fully on her album and get everything done before she headed back to Mexico. Soooo, as I type this I'm on a plane to LA to start GNR rehearsals for the upcoming tour, Poc's album on my laptop with headphones tweaking mixes, and finishing the "Let Your Voice Be Heard" transcription. (I get a lot of work done on long flights...) And in 6 hours I'll be laughing and making noise with my GNR bandmates, hopefully releasing this song soon after. If you're reading this in early September that means my first night in LA was spent in the hotel room uploading audio files, submitting forms, prepping webpages... if you're reading this in late-September, I probably have no memory of my first night in LA, or many that followed.
LYRICS:

Everybody wants to silence you, wants a mile from you, plus an inch or two
And in the end there's a door slammed in your face
Well I don't wanna take a thing from you, I just wanna feel, have something real with you
I just wanna fly high to another place

I'll give you my love and fond devotion
I'll give you my heart and my emotion
All I want from you in return
Is to let your voice be heard

They all want you to pay the price, they wanna see how long they can roll the dice
And in the end you realize it's just a game.
I've had enough and so have you of the compromises to live by their rules.
So let's all give something they can't take

I'll give you my love and fond devotion
I'll give you my heart and all my emotion
All I want from you in return
Is to sing out loud, let your voice be heard

I'll give you my blood and my rotten soul
I'll give you my world, you can have it all
All I want from you in return
Is to let your voice be heard
