Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal @ Xroads
Il virtuoso delle
sei corde, oggi membro dei Guns 'n Roses, su un palco romano con la
sua band
Questa sera è di scena la performance del virtuoso della sei corde Ron Thal che si esibisce al Crossroads. Conosco questo chitarrista dal 1995 grazie al suo esordio solista, “The Adventures of Bumblefoot”, uscito allora per la storica label Shrapnel, vera fucina di talenti per gli amanti dei guitar heros. Purtroppo la cornice di pubblico è assai scarsa e la maggior parte dei presenti è formata da fans dei G’n’R in quanto è dal 2006 che il chitarrista è in pianta stabile nella band di Axl Rose. Tuttavia l’audience è calorosa e non appena inizia il concerto si riversa tutta sotto il palco. Thal da parte sua tiene la scena come se avesse di fronte un locale strapieno, coinvolgendo il pubblico dall’inizio alla fine con battute, improvvisazioni e brani a richiesta. La band è formata da basso, chitarra ritmica e batteria. Sapevo già che mi sarei trovato di fronte un musicista dalle capacità esecutive e tecniche straordinarie, ma la vera sorpresa della serata, almeno per me, è stata l’aver scoperto anche la sua bravura dietro al microfono. Ero convinto, infatti, che avrebbe proposto per lo più brani strumentali, invece la set list è composta quasi interamente da pezzi cantati proprio dal bravissimo Ron che esegue numerose canzoni della sua discografia solista. I brani hanno tutti delle forti influenze di rock moderno, a partire dai System of a Down in versione più melodica per arrivare ad un genere rock punk di stampo radiofonico. Si tratta di composizioni che, pur essendo abbastanza semplici per natura, vengono impreziosite dai superbi soli di Thal. Tuttavia le sue doti da guitar hero si rendono evidenti soprattutto nei due brani completamente strumentali in cui si possono sentire diverse ispirazioni che passano da Michael Schenker a Van Halen. Tra i brani proposti ci sono molte canzoni fuori scaletta, comprese diverse cover dei classici del rock e dell'heavy metal come ad esempio “More than a Feeling” dei Boston, “Running Wild” dei Judas Priest, “Can’t Stand Losing You” dei Police e “Run to The Hills” degli Iron Maiden. In particolare in quest’ultima l’artista dimostra a pieno le sue doti canore non sfigurando di fronte a Dickinson. Una buona parte
del concerto è stata poi dedicata ad un misto di improvvisazione e
interpretazione dei brani storici dei Guns, alcuni presenti in
scaletta, tra cui “Sweet Child o’ Mine” e “Don’t Cry”, altri
richiesti esplicitamente dal pubblico, infatti lo stesso Thal li
accenna con il riff portante e la voce, senza nascondere di non
conoscere tutte le parole e senza essere seguito dalla sua band. Una considerazione personale,anche dopo aver parlato un po’ con l’artista al termine dello show, è che si evince come sia rimasto umile anche se negli ultimi anni ha calcato grandi palchi trovandosi di fronte a folle oceaniche e questo rende ancora più merito a questo fantastico musicista. Sembrerà ripetitivo, ma ancora una volta dobbiamo ringraziare il Xroads e Rock ‘n Roll Eventi, senza dei quali tanti meravigliosi artisti, tra cui "Bumblefoot", non sarebbero mai arrivati a Roma. Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal @ Xroads The virtuoso of the six strings, currently a member of Guns' n Roses, on a Roman stage with his band @ Xroads - December 15, 2013 This evening will be showcasing the performance of the six-string virtuoso Ron Thal who performs at the Crossroads. I know this guitar since 1995 thanks to his solo debut, "The Adventures of Bumblefoot", then came out for the historic label Shrapnel, a real hotbed of talent for lovers of guitar heroes. Unfortunately, the setting of the public is very poor, and most of those present is formed by fans of GNR as it is since 2006 that the guitarist is in a permanent position in the band of Axl Rose. However, the audience is warm and as soon as the concert begins pours all under the stage. Thal for his part takes the stage as if he had in front of a room packed, involving the audience from beginning to end with jokes, songs and improvisations on request. The band is made up of bass, rhythm guitar and drums. I already knew that I would find myself in front of a musician from the executive and extraordinary technical ability, but the real surprise of the evening, at least for me, was to have also discovered his talent behind the microphone. I was convinced, in fact, that it would propose mostly instrumental tracks, instead of the set list is composed almost entirely of songs sung by the excellent Ron just that performs several songs of his solo discography. The songs all have strong influences from modern rock, from System Of A Down version in order to achieve a more melodic punk rock genre mold radio. These compositions which, although quite simple in nature, are enhanced by superb just Thal. However, his talents as a guitar hero become evident particularly in the two fully instrumental songs where you can hear different inspirations that pass from Michael Schenker and Van Halen. Among the pieces offered there are many songs out of the lineup, including several covers of classic rock and heavy metal such as "More than a Feeling" by Boston, "Running Wild" by Judas Priest, "Can't Stand Losing You" the Police and "Run To the Hills" by Iron Maiden. In particular, in the latter, the artist demonstrates his vocal abilities to the full non-disfiguring the face of Dickinson. A good part

It may seem repetitive, but again we have to thank the Xroads and Rock ' n Roll events, without which so many wonderful artists, including "Bumblefoot" would never arrive in Rome.
