Entrevista exclusiva con Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal El guitarrista de Guns N’ Roses toma la palabra
[Ricardo Portmán] Ser el guitarra solista de Guns N' Roses implica, entre otras cosas, ser un sobreviviente. Estar en una de las últimas grandes bandas del rock & roll, junto con un frontman tan exigente como Axl Rose, es un reto que Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal (New York, 1969) ha sabido afrontar con grandes dosis de virtuosismo y la madurez de una larga carrera solista previa sobre los hombros. Ron, aparte de sus obligaciones con la banda, también ha ejercido como productor, ingeniero y ha seguido con su propio grupo tocando por varios continentes. Observando a la distancia la historia de la banda y la rotación de sus guitarristas se me viene a la mente, guardando las distancias, la dinámica que tuvieron los Stones con sus solistas. ¿Podría ser Bumblefoot el Mick Taylor de los Guns N' Roses? Es muy posible, si comparamos la base bluesera de Slash con el estilo más lírico de Thal. Ron seguramente es el guitarrista técnicamente más dotado de la historia de la banda californiana.
Su primer lanzamiento discográfico data del lejano 1995 (The Adventures of Bumblefoot). Desde entonces ha publicado otros diez discos, destacando la serie de Normal (2005) y Abnormal (2008). Precisamente esas tablas adquiridas en los estudios y las giras son las que le permitieron adaptarse a la jungla Guns para la grabación del Chinese Democracy. Entró sustituyendo al excéntrico Buckethead en 2004 y desde entonces ha estado compartiendo las labores a las seis cuerdas con Robin Finck (hasta el 2009), DJ Ashba y Richard Fortus. Hoy en día no se comprenden a los Guns N' Roses sin esa gran performance del Pink Panther Theme y la visión de la doble mástil Vigier de Bumblefoot, escupiendo riffs y solos de temas clásicos que están grabados a fuego en el ADN de la cultura rock & roll. Ron atendió amablemente a Ecos del Vinilo justo al final de su más reciente tour. Pudimos conversar sobre G N' R, sus propios discos, la industria musical y más. Ricardo Portmán: Ron, eres el guitarrista más ortodoxamente técnico de todas las alineaciones de Guns N' Roses. ¿Pesa mucho el legado de los otros grandes solistas (Slash, Buckethead) que ha tenido la banda? ¿Cómo te planteaste tus aportes y sonido personal dentro de temas tan conocidos? Ron Thal: Cuando me uní a Guns N' Roses, tenía que pasar algún tiempo para encontrar mi lugar musicalmente dentro de las canciones. Encontrar el equilibrio entre tocar las partes nota por nota, e improvisar y escribir mis propias partes. Después del primer año de gira tuve una idea más clara de qué es lo prioritario - si se trata de una parte de la canción que alguien puede cantar, tocarlas de la forma en que la gente las conoce y las ama. Es un honor estar en una banda conocida por tener guitarristas sobresalientes, y me alegro de haber tenido la oportunidad de escribir y grabar mis propias partes en el Chinese Democracy, tanto con la guitarra sin trastes como todo lo demás. Seguiré esforzándome para dar todo lo mejor que pueda y seguir mejorando para estar a la altura del legado. RP: Son casi míticos tus meet-n-greets con los fans después de los conciertos. Tu cercanía con tus seguidores es más una excepción que una regla. ¿Bumblefoot sigue teniendo también alma de fan? ¿Con cuál artista legendario te gustaría (como fan) tener un meet-n-greet? RT: Artistas y aficionados son dos partes que crean una entidad completa, y deben estar conectados y tratarse como un todo. Cuando hago shows como solista, los fans por lo general terminan en el escenario cantando conmigo, haciendo jamming, escuchándonos los unos a los otros y respondiendo. Es muy cercano. Cada artista tiene que hacer (que sus fans) se sientan cómodos, y eso yo lo respeto. No he conocido a ningún artista en un meet-n-greet organizado, siempre he preferido simplemente disfrutar de la música sin hacerlo tan personal. Puede parecer una contradicción, pero se relaciona con mi naturaleza, yo soy más de dar y proveer. Mis propios deseos y necesidades son muy simples, y para mi es placentero poder dar. RP: Tus discos Normal y Abnormal engloban de manera admirable historias personales, tratadas musicalmente de una manera muy inspirada. ¿Habrá una tercera entrega? ¿En caso de ser así como te la planteas? RT: Creo que esos dos discos tienen un buen equilibrio como están, y cuando pienso en todo tipo de 'secuela', la idea me parece forzada. Pero yo no puedo predecir como será el siguiente álbum de Bumblefoot. Siempre escribo sin un plan, y el concepto del álbum se forma, por sí mismo, de una forma orgánica.
RP: Es inquietante ver como en los últimos años las cadenas musicales de televisión y sellos discográficos apuestan fuerte por el pop plástico. ¿El rock, tal como lo conocemos, esta muriendo? ¿Será pasajera esta moda del pop vacío? RT: Las empresas deben invertir el máximo en lo que atrae a las masas, se trata de la supervivencia y el crecimiento. Nada está muerto, a menos que lo dejes morir. Si te gusta el rock n' roll, el financiamiento público es una buena manera en que los fans pueden apoyar a los artistas que les gustan, para que puedan seguir haciendo música. Ya no es acerca de las discográficas, se trata de los fans - sin el apoyo de ellos, la música va a morir. RP: De gira como solista en Albania, Grecia, Italia, Australia, UK. Tocando en vivo con Guns N' Roses y Lita Ford. [Ricardo Portman] Being the lead guitarist of Guns N 'Roses implies, among other things, be a survivor. Being in one of the last great rock & roll bands, along with frontman Axl Rose as demanding as it is a challenge that Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal (New York, 1969) has been able to cope with large doses of virtuosity and maturity of after a long solo career on the shoulders. Ron, aside from his duties with the band, also has served as producer, engineer and has continued with his own band playing across continents. Looking at the distance the history of the band and the rotation of its guitarists comes to my mind, aloof, the dynamics that took the Stones with their soloists. Could Mick Taylor Bumblefoot of Guns N 'Roses? It is quite possible, if we compare the base bluesy Slash with Thal lyrical style. Ron is probably the most technically gifted guitarist of the Californian band's history.

Ricardo Portmán: Ron, you are the most technical lead guitar of all Gn'R lineups. How heavy is the legacy of the other great soloists (Slash, Buckethead) who has had the band? How did you approach your contributions and personal sound in such familiar-to-millions songs? Ron Thal: When I first joined Guns N' Roses, I had to spend some time to find my place musically within the songs. Finding the balance between playing the parts note-for-note, and improvising and writing my own parts. After the first year of touring I got a good sense of what to make the priority – if it's a part of the song someone can sing, play it the way people know the song and love the song. t's an honor to be in a band known for stand-out guitarists, and I'm glad to have had the opportunity to write and record my own parts for Chinese Democracy, the fretless guitar and all. I continue to put in the effort to be the best I can be, and keep improving, and live up to the legacy. RP: They are almost mythical your meet-n-greets with fans after concerts. Your closeness to the fans is more the exception than the rule. Bumblefoot still has the soul of a fan as well? With legendary artist what you like (as a fan) have a meet-n-greet? RT: Artists and fans are two parts that create a whole entity, and should be connected and treated as one entity. When I do solo shows, fans usually end up on stage with me singing, jamming, we're hearing what each other say and responding, it's very personal. Every performer has to do what makes them comfortable, and I respect whatever that is. I haven't met any artists in an organized meet-n-greet, I always preferred to just enjoy the music without getting personal. It may seem like a contradiction, but it relates to my nature, I'm more of a giver and provider. My own wants and needs are very simple, and I get more pleasure out of giving pleasure. RP: Your solo albums Normal and Abnormal have so admirable very personal stories, treated in a very musically inspired. There will be a third release of this concept? Or you prefer to release something different in the future? RT: I think those two albums form a nice balance as they are, and when I think about any kind of 'sequel', the idea seems forced. But I can't predict what the next Bumblefoot album will be, I always write without a plan, and an album concept forms itself, organically.

RT: Businesses will put the most stock in what appeals to the masses, it's about survival and growth. Nothing is dead, unless you let it die. If you like rock n' roll, crowd funding is a great way fans can support the artists they like, so they can continue making music. It's no longer about record labels, it's about fans - without the support of fans, the music will die. RP: Touring as soloist in Albania, Greece, Italy, Australia, UK, South America.
