Interview mit Guns N’ Roses-Gitarrist Ron Thal „Wie ein Piano, das einem auf den Kopf fällt“ Von Gerrit Wustmann
Gitarrenvirtuose Ron Thal, auch bekannt unter seinem Band- und Künstlernamen Bumblefoot, hat jüngst sein neues Soloalbum „Abnormal“ veröffentlicht. Er spielt Lead-Gitarre bei Guns N’ Roses, deren seit Mitte der Neunziger in Arbeit befindliches neues Album „Chinese Democracy“ zwar noch immer nicht vorliegt – im September erscheint mit dem Song „Shackler’s Revenge“ aber eine erste Auskopplung. Zeit für ein Interview!
Ron, du hast soeben Dein neues Album „Abnormal“ veröffentlicht, Du nimmst an der Kampagne Rock Against Diabetes teil, und ganz nebenbei bist du neben Robin Finck und Richard Fortus einer der drei Gitarristen einer der größten Rockbands der Welt. Wie fühlt sich das an?

Mann, ich verbringe zehn Stunden am Tag umgeben von zwei Computern und zwei Telefonen, schließe Vereinbarungen mit Händlern, gebe Interviews, versuche, mit jedem in Kontakt zu bleiben, dann renne ich ins Studio, mastere Alben und mache Musik für Fernsehshows. Dazu kommt die Organisationsarbeit für die Konzerte in Las Vegas, ich kümmere mich darum, dass es allen, die für RAD (Rock Against Diabetes) jammen, ebenfalls gut geht.
Manchmal, zu seltenen Gelegenheiten, komme ich sogar dazu, Gitarre zu spielen (lacht). So läuft es seit Monaten. Und ich bin wirklich aufgeregt wegen „Shackler’s Revenge“, das nächsten Monat erscheint – ein toller Song! Du scheinst immer der entspannte Typ zu sein, der den engsten Kontakt zu den Fans pflegt... Die Fans sind alles – es ist nicht schwer, sie wissen zu lassen, wie wichtig sie mir sind. Ich tue, was ich kann. Kannst Du mehr über das Songwriting und Recording von „Abnormal“ erzählen?
Dieses Album kam aus dem Nichts und hat mich voll erwischt. So etwas geschieht öfter, für eine Weile bin ich „trocken“, schreiben keine Songs, und dann ist es wie ein Piano, das einem auf den Kopf fällt, all diese Musik kommt plötzlich angeflogen, Texte, Melodien, Guitar-Lines, Beats, Arrangements, alles. Ich rufe Dennis Leeflang (Schlagzeuger) an, und wir jammen, erstellen rohe Tracks, und über die folgenden Monate führt eins zum anderen. Bei diesem Album hatte ich einen anderen Ansatz als sonst: Ich habe die Gitarren ohne Verstärker aufgenommen und die Tracks erst später mit dem Verstärker bearbeitet. Auf diese Art hat man die reine Performance und kann alle Zeit, die man braucht, darauf verwenden, den richtigen Verstärker, das richtige Mikro zu finden. Auch beim Gesang habe ich etwas Neues ausprobiert. Anstatt die Songs Vers für Vers, Strophe für Strophe zu singen, sang ich das gesamte Album am Stück durch, ohne Pause, und das jeden Tag einen ganzen Monat lang. Am Ende wählte ich aus diesen Takes die besten Performances aus. Ich bin noch nicht sicher, ob ich touren werde. Ich würde gerne, aber es gibt so viele Dinge zu erledigen, die ich aufgeschoben habe, und für die ich Zeit schaffen muss. Ich möchte eine Lern-DVD machen, mein eigenes Rezept für eine scharfe Sauce, all diese Dinge, die ich seit Jahren plane und langsam mal tun müsste, sonst tue ich es nie. Es gibt immer irgend etwas anderes zu tun, daher muss ich mir für diese Dinge Zeit freischaufeln. Bald wieder auf Tour? Alles ist bestens. Guns bekommen seit jeher schlechte Presse – das neue Lineup und die lange Arbeit an „Chinese Democracy“ geben Anlass zu allerlei Spekulationen. Hast du eine Botschaft an die „punks in the press“? Die können ruhig weiterhin die Situation analysieren, das ist in Ordnung. Wir werden weiterhin Musik machen und um die Welt touren. Im September veröffentlichen Guns and Roses den neuen Song „Shackler’s Revenge“. Kannst Du darüber etwas erzählen? Wird das ein Vorbote des neuen Albums sein? In wenigen Wochen werdet ihr den Song hören... Er ist die erste vom aktuellen Lineup legitimierte Veröffentlichung – wir werden sehen, in welche Richtung sich die Dinge von dort aus entwickeln. „Chinese Democracy“: Das Album, das für die einen ein Running Gag, für die anderen der Heilige Gral des Rock ist, entsteht seit Mitte der Neunziger und hat Berichten zufolge bisher mehr als 13 Millionen Dollar Produktionskosten verschlungen. Die Band hat seither rund 70 Songs geschrieben. Gastmusiker sind unter anderem Buckethead, Josh Freese, Brian May, Moby, Marco Beltrami, Sebastian Bach und zahlreiche weitere.

Erstmals erwähnte Sänger Axl Rose den Albumtitel 1999. Ein Veröffentlichungstermin wurde erstmals für März 2007 bestätigt und dann wieder gekippt. Laut Keyboarder Dizzy Reed ist die Platte seit Frühjahr 2008 fertig – seitdem wird mit der Plattenfirma Geffen/Interscope/Universal über die Details der Veröffentlichung verhandelt.
Die Ankündigung der Auskopplung „Shackler’s Revenge“ wird von Insidern als Beginn der PR-Kampagne zum Album interpretiert – die Band hält sich mit Details bedeckt und kämpft mit über das Internet an die Öffentlichkeit gedrungenen Demoversionen mehrerer Stücke. Während die Chinese Democracy World Tour 2002 in Hong Kong eröffnet wurde, fiel nun die Fanseite www.chinesedemocracy.com der im Zuge von Olympia ausgeweiteten Internetzensur der chinesischen Behörden zum Opfer.

You just released your new solo record Abnormal, you’re part of the campaign Rock Against Diabetes and besides you are one of the three guitarists in which is one of the world’s greatest rockbands. How does that feel?

BUSY, haha... man, I've been spending 10 hours a day with two computers and two phones around me, constantly working out agreements with distributors, doing interviews and keeping in touch with everyone, then running to the studio and mastering albums and doing music for TV shows. Then there's all the organizing for the Vegas concerts, making sure everyone jamming for the R.A.D. (Rock Against Diabetes) shows are good to go... sometimes, on rare occasions I even get to play guitar, haha... it's been like this for months. And I'm real excited about Shackler's Revenge coming out next month - great song!=2 0

You always seem to be the relaxed guy, the one who holds the closest contact to the fans...

You guys are everything - it doesn't take much to let you know I appreciate you... I do what I can :)

Can you tell me more about the songwriting and recording process of Abnormal?

Man, this album just hit me out of nowhere. It happens like that a lot, I'm "dry" for a while (no songs being written) and then it's like a piano falling on your head, all this music comes flying out all at once, lyrics, melodies, guitar lines, beats, arrangements, everything. I call Dennis Leeflang (drummer - www.dennisleeflang.com ) and we start jamming, laying rough tracks, and it all comes together over the next few months. Then mixing, mastering, artwork, manufacturing... I took a different approach for this album - I "reamped" the guitars. That's when you record the guitar raw, without an amp, and later send the raw tracks to an amp. This way, you have the performance, and can spend as much time as you need on trying different amps, different mics, all of that. For the vocals, I also tried something different. Instead of singing the songs line-by-line, verse-by-verse, I sang the entire album straight through without stopping each day, every day, for a month. Then I chose the best performances from those takes. I have videos of the recording process on YouTube, at www.youtube.com/bumblef oot.

Are you planning to tour after the album or are you waiting for Guns to hit the road?

I'm not sure if I'll tour. I'd like to, but there's so much work I've put aside, that I need to make time for. I want to do an instructional DVD, make my own hot sauce, all kinds of things I've been planning for years that I need to do now, or I may never get them done. There's always gonna be something else I could be doing - I need to make time for these things.

How is life in Guns N’ Roses? From what I’ve heard, Joe Satriani created the connection between you and the band....

Yes, that was in 2004. All is well :)

With all the bad press about Guns – being a band of hired musicians and all that stuff – here’s your place to give a message to the “punks in the press” about what Guns really is.

They can keep analyzing the situation, that's fine. We'll keep recording and touring the world.

So Guns have a new song coming out in September, titled Shackler’s Revenge. Can you tell more about the song? And will it be a single, will it be the “start” of Chinese Democracy?

You'll hear it in a few weeks... :) It's the first song legitimately released from new Guns - we'll just have to see where things go from there...
