Bumblefoot - Normal (10/10)

¿Quién diablos es Bumblefoot? Probablemente esa es la primera pregunta que te haces al ver este review. Quizás la respuesta a eso es: "el mejor guitarrista que he visto". Así de simple.

Bumblefoot (conocido también como Ron Thal) es de esos genios que pueden hacer lo que quieran en las seis cuerdas. Es de esos tipos que nadie comprende, pero que, una vez que te metes en su música, no puedes salir. No solo por la demencia que ella encierra, sino también por su extraño magnetismo, sus inteligentes letras y, sobre todo, su IMPRESIONANTE manera de tocar guitarra, sazonado con una voz muy buena, y con temas llenos de detalles simplemente maravillosos.

Analizar un CD de Bumblefoot es una misión compleja, ya que es muy difícil de encasillar en un estilo definido. Algunos que han escuchado este disco dicen que es medio punk, otros que es rockero, otros que es algo inentendible, y otros (como yo) que es un derroche de genialidad de principio a fin.

"Normal" cuenta la historia de un músico que decide volverse normal, para lo que le dan medicamentos, los que le impiden seguir componiendo, y todo el desarrollo del álbum se dedica a inspeccionar los cambios de la personalidad del protagonista, y como afecta el no poder hacer música a su vida. Escuchar el CD sin leer las letras es un pecado imperdonable.

La overtura con la entusiasta "Normal" da paso a la inquietante "Real", con unos tappings increibles, a la que sigue la intensa "Turn Around", con un intermedio de miedo. "Rockstar for a day" nos devuelve la parte irónica del disco, con una letra hilarante (y bastante crítica), para luego dar comienzo al temazo "Overloaded" (mi favorito del disco), con una sección intermedia que saca chispas, y un riff que te deja orbitando en Urano.

"Pretty Ugly" y "The Color of Justice" mantienen las revoluciones mentales y piroténicas en alta velocidad (ayuda a esto el impecable trabajo del batero Dennis LeeFlang -Sun Caged-), para luego caer en la cadenciosa melodía de "Breaking", que tiene un sentimiento que te para los pelos de la nuca.

"More" tiene una de las letras mas lindas que he leido, en donde el amor a la música se plasma irrefutablemente. "Awake" nos introduce en una atmósfera triste, que luego da paso a la divertida "Life inside your ass".

Todo termina con la densa "Shadow", la que da paso al final feliz con "Thank you".

Para mi este CD fue lo mejor del año pasado, y debo haberlo escuchado, fácilmente, más de 150 veces. Aun así, siempre le descubro cosas nuevas, y miles de detalles. Si eres un fan de la guitarra, acá tienes una colección de licks y técnicas para archivar en el mas grande de los libros, aunque todo sazonado con el buen gusto y locura que solo los maestros (si, esos que rara vez se ven) tienen.

Un trabajo que hay que atreverse a explorar, que contiene mas detalles de los que imaginas, y con un sonido y producción de primera. Si tus oidos son reticentes a sensasiones nuevas, entonces ni te atrevas a ponerlo, pero si estás aburrido de lo mismo, y piensas que los reales genios son los que dan vuelta las cosas y hacen algo totalmente distinto, entonces este disco abrazará esas esperanzas, y les dará un sentido.

Una obra maestra.

Who the hell is Bumblefoot? Probably that´s the first question that you are asking to yourself once you see this review. Maybe the answer is: "The best guitar player I´ve ever seen". It´s just THAT simple.

Bumblefoot (also known as Ron Thal) is one of those geniuses that can make whatever they want within the six strings. He's one of those guys that nobody understands, but, once you get in his music, you just can´t get out. Not only because of the insanity, but also for its strange magnetism, his intelligent lyrics and, overall, his AMAZING way of playing guitar, all complemented with a great voice and with songs full of simply amazing details.

Analyzing a Bumblefoot CD is a tough mission, because it´s very hard to fit in a specific style. Some people that have heard this record say it´s punk, others say rock, others say it´s something that can´t be described, and others (like me) think that this is pure genius from bottom to top.

"Normal" tells the story of a musician that decides to become normal, and takes medication for that, and they have the effect that he can´t write music any more, and all the development of the record is due to see the changes in the personality of the main character, and how does the fact of not being able to write music affects his life. Listening to the CD without reading the lyrics is an unforgettable sin.

The opening with the enthusiastic "Normal" gives turn to the uneasy "Real", that has some amazing tapping, followed by the intense "Turn Around", that has an interlude that scares me. "Rockstar For A Day" gives back the ironic part of the CD, with a pretty funny (and critical) lyric, that gives turn to the amazing "Overloaded", by far my favorite song on the album, with a breathtaking middle section, and a riff that leaves you orbiting in Uranus.

"Pretty Ugly" and "The Color of Justice" keep the mental and pyrotechnical revolutions at high speed (backed up by the flawless work of drummer Dennis Leeflang -formerly of Sun Caged-), to give turn to the mellow melody of "Breaking", that has a feeling that gives me chills.

"More" has one of the most beautiful lyrics I´ve ever read, in where the love for music is undoubtedly there. "Awake" takes us to a sad atmosphere, that then gives place to the funny "Life Inside Your Ass".

Everything ends with the dense "Shadow", that gives place to the happy ending with "Thank you".

To me this CD was the best of 2005, and I´ve heard it at least 150 times. Having that in mind, I always keep discovering new things and thousand of details. If you´re a fan of the guitar, here you have a collection of licks and techniques to keep in the biggest of the books, even though all is spiced up with the good taste and insanity that only the masters (yeah, those you hardly ever see) have.

A work that you must dare to explore, that has more details than you can imagine, and with a top sound and production. If your ears don´t like new sensations, then don´t even dare to put this record, but if you´re bored of hearing the same all the time, and think that the real geniuses are the people that turn things around and make something completely different, then this CD will embrace your hopes, and will give them a meaning.

A true masterpiece.
