Bumblefoot alias Ron Thal, est une anomalie dans notre paysage musical. Avec déjà 6 albums à son actif, il reste sur un chemin parallèle car dans aucun style particulier, mixant tout ce qui se fait sans aucun complexe. Pas facile me direz vous ? Mais c’est sans compter sur les talents de compositeur et de guitariste de Ron.

Avec « Normal », Bumblefoot prend encore une autre dimension. Tous les titres de l’album vont encore plus loin dans l’émotion, dans le mix de styles et encore plus loin dans les riffs « abracadabrantesques ». L’originalité de Bumblefoot pourrait paraître difficile à capter mais les compositions bénéficient d’une mise en place et d’un arrangement parfaits, rendant l’ensemble très fluide et captivant dès la première écoute.

Pour être généraliste et tenter de vous donner une idée de ce que peut être Bumblefoot, disons simplement qu’il s’agit d’une base rock, sur laquelle est ajoutée tout ce qui peut être considéré comme « fusion ». Un peu comme si il s’agissait d’un cousin à Mike Patton mais sans être trop proche.

« Normal » est un album original qui mérite sa place dans notre paysage musical un peu comme l’était Faith No More mais avec une bonne dose d’extasie en plus.

Bumblefoot alias Ron Thal, is an abnormality in our musical landscape. With already 6 albums to his credit, he stays on a parallel road where he does not limit himself to one particular sound, mixing all kinds of music without any problem. Not easy? But it is, with the talents of composer and guitarist Ron.

With "Normal", Bumblefoot takes us to another dimension. All the titles of the album go even farther to the emotion, to the mix of styles and even farther to riffs " abracadabra-esque " . The originality of Bumblefoot could seem difficult to get but the compositions benefit from a perfect arrangement , that make this album sound really fluid and fascinating from the first listening.

To try to give you an idea of what can be Bumblefoot, let us say simply that it's a rock base, on which is added all which can be considered as "fusion". As if it was a cousin of Mike Patton, but without being too similar to him.

"Normal" is an original album which deserves its place in our musical landscape, as a Faith No More on ecstasy...

Ron Thal alias BUMBLEFOOT s'était quelque peu retiré de la scène musicale, pour enregistrer et mixer d'autres groupes. Une période qui lui a permis de se ressourcer et de se remettre de ses mésaventures passées... Mais voilà, ce n'était que temporaire, et Mr Foot revient ! Après un aperçu concluant des nouveaux titres en Mars dernier à la Maroquinerie, Ron se devait de nous finaliser tout ça en studio pour un nouvel album. Et quel album ! 'Normal' tourne autour du concept de normalité sur scène et de non normalité en dehors ?... connaissant le gaillard, on peut sincèrement se demander si sa vie ne lui sert pas d'exemple... Tous les styles sont passés en revue, avec toujours cette empreinte personnelle aux sonorités punk/métal et cet esprit très zappatien. L'immanquable 'Rockstar For A Day' (peut être une allusion à l'émission de MTV du même nom...) est incontestablement le tube radio de l'album. Sur l'excellent titre rock/metal 'Turn Around', Ron nous sort certainement l'un de ses meilleur solo, donc, ne vous inquiétez pas, il n'a rien perdu de son jeu de gratte, bien au contraire... On retrouve aussi des chansons plus barrées chères à notre new-yorkais comme 'The Color Of Justice' ou 'Real' dans un style Rock/Rap, et des titres plus calmes comme 'Awake', que l'on aurait pu retrouver sur 'Hermit', ou 'Shadow'. Ron Thal nous offre, avec 'Normal', l'album le plus efficace et abouti de sa carrière. (Mais j'espère me tromper...) A period that allowed him to recharge and to come back from his past misadventures... But it was only temporary, and Mr Foot returns! After a conclusive general idea of the new titles last March at the Maroquinerie (club), Ron finalized all that in the studio in order to give us a new album. And what an album! 'Normal' revolves around the concept of normality on stage and of un-normality outside?... knowing the sly devil, one sincerely can wonder if his life didn’t serve as an example for him... All the styles are reviewed, with always this personal punk-metal sound and a very Zappa-ish spirit. The inevitable 'Rockstar For a Day' (can be an allusion to the show on MTV of the same name. ..) is unquestionably the radio single of the album. On the excellent rock-metal title 'Turn Around,' Ron gives us what is certainly one of his best solos, therefore, do not worry, he has not lost his guitar technique, quite the contrary... One discovers also more weird songs, close to the heart of our dear New-Yorker as 'The Color Of Justice' or 'Real' in a rock-rap style, and titles more calm as 'Awake,' that could have been on the album 'Hermit,' or 'Shadow.' Ron Thal gives us, with 'Normal,' the most effective and successful album of his career. (But I hope to be mistaken...)

Bumblefoot : Normal Remettant en cause la normalité avec Normal, comme en leur temps Nothing ou Jimmy Hendrix, Bumblefoot offre 13 titres qui sont des dignes successeurs d'Uncool. Une guitare fluide, audacieuse, aux solos à la fois furieux et humbles, l'ensemble reste très rock'n'roll, mais aussi très pop comme l'acidulé "Normal" avec son juste formatage et son impression de déjà-vue. Rhythme entraînant, Ron Thal n'a pas son pareil pour des riffs punchy, ayant quelques années de rock instrumental derrière lui, "Real" grimpe littéralement aux rideaux, tentures de guitares, avalanches en trémolo de guitares, System of a Down rencontre Frédéric Chopin, -what the * is real-, un silence pour le fuck, c'est subtil, le reste s'enflamme à la vodka, pour affronter les frimas de l'hiver et le monotone réel.

On retrouve l'esprit très lyrique de Uncool, notamment sur "Turn around", ou "Pretty ugly". La basse s'escrime sur "The color of justice", le tout empruntant plus à Béla Bartók qu'à Rage Against The Machine, Ron Thal laissant parler son histoire avec le tapping de "Breaking" où la guitare acoustique en surimposition est magique, comme sur le très aérien "Awake" qui s'envole dans les limbes, avec un refrain léger, un mélange de guitare électrique et de guitare acoustique, et des paroles qui s'effilochent lentement.

Le morceau de fermeture "Thank you" est un medley, un melting-pot extraordinaire, où un peu de tout se rencontre : rock, ska, funk, des choeurs, une impression celtique avec un bagad, le tout aussi varié que Ron Thal.

Questioning normality with "Normal," as Nothing and Jimi Hendrix did in the past, Bumblefoot offers 13 songs, worthy successors of "Uncool." The guitar playing is fluid, with daring ideas and furious but humble solos, a whole rock 'n' roll package but with some pop touches like the self-titled track "Normal." With rousing rhythms, Ron Thal is second to none when it comes to punchy riffs, as he has a few years of instrumental rock behind him. "Real" literally climbs the curtains, an avalanche of guitars, System Of A Down meets Frédéric Chopin. "What the f*** is real ?" leaving a subtle silence for the "fuck," then continues on, ignited like vodka to fight against a wintry wheather and dull reality.

We find again Uncool's lyric spirit on "Turn Around" or "Pretty Ugly." The bass cutting deep on "The Color Of Justice", taking ideas more from Béla Bartok than Rage Against The Machine. Ron Thal lets his guitar history show in "Breaking," where the additional acoustic guitar is magic... just like the really aerial "Awake" who's flying into the limbs, with a light chorus and a mix of acousitc guitar, electric guitar and lyrics that frays slowly.

The closing track, "Thank you" is an extraordinary melting-pot where everything comes together : rock, ska, funk, chorus voices, Celtic bagpipes, the whole thing as multi-sided as Ron Thal himself.

Normal ? Pas vraiment ! Bumblefoot alias Ron Thal n'est pas un musicien comme les autres, il serait plutôt de la race des "aliens de la six corde". Alors shredder certes, mais shredder au grand cœur. Engagé dans différentes causes humanitaires, il n'a pas hésité une seconde, juste avant sa sortie en octobre 2001, à renommer son album qui devait à l'origine s'appeler "Guitars Suck", "9.11" en hommage aux victimes du onze septembre. Et c'est à la croix rouge américaine qui reversa tout les fonds récoltés. Un mot, un seul : Respect ! Toujours est-il qu'il nous revient avec son septième album, lui et le seul musicien qui l'accompagne sur cette galette, le batteur Dennis Leeflang (Sun Caged). On pourrait résumer "Normal" de la façon suivante : un disque de pop rock à la sauce Beatles survitaminée avec une grosse (mais alors très grosse) part de fun et relativement peu d'excès de shredding (un comble !). Bumblefoot a fait dans le concis avec un impact immédiat. Alors hormis l'hallucinant et psychotique "The Color Of Justice", les morceaux, aux références tour à tour 60's et punk rock, accroche directement l'oreille. La palme revient au titre "Normal" qui se révèle être une vraie petite perle avec sa mélodie entêtante. Côté texte, c'est du grand délire… Exemple : "Life Inside Your Ass", si ça c'est pas du titre qui tue ! Bref, "Normal" est un album bien construit, homogène, sans prétention autre que de nous offrir de vraies chansons, sans démonstration (ou si peu), autrement dit presque normal pour un musicien qui lui ne l'est pas ! Un disque hautement recommandé car hautement jouissif ! (8/10)

Normal ? Not really ! Bumblefoot aka Ron Thal is not a musician like others, he's more of the "aliens of the 6 strings" race. Shredder yes, but shredder with a big heart. Involved in different humanitarian causes, he did not hestitate one second, just before its release in October 2001, to redirect his album, which originally had to be called " Guitars Suck ", "9.11" in homage to the victims of the September 11th attacks. And it is to the American Red Cross that he donated all the profits. There's only one word: respect! However he returns with his seventh album, him and the only musician who plays with him on this album, the drummer Dennis Leeflang. We could summarize "Normal" in the following way : a pop rock disc in a Beatles-enriched sauce and with a big (but then really big) part of fun and relatively not an over-excess of shredding (a height!) Bumblefoot went straight to the point, with an immediate impact. Then, except the hallucinating and psychotic "The color of Justice," the tunes, influenced alternately by the 60's and Punk rock, gets right in your ears. The palm goes to the "Normal" tune which appears to be a true pearl with its catchy melody. As far as the lyrics are concerned, it's a big frenzy... Example: "Life Inside your Ass," if that is not a killer title then I don't know what is! In brief, "Normal" is a well built album, homogeneous, without any other pretention than offering us real songs, without demonstration (or so little,) in other words almost normal for a musician who is not (normal...!) A highly recommended disk because highly enjoyable (8/10)

Ron Thal est de retour. Après un Uncool un peu décevant au goût de certains, du fait qu’il avait mis le holà sur les plans de guitare hallucinants, et un9.11 aux allures de fourre-tout, le new-yorkais revient avec un nouvel album, un vrai, avec uniquement des nouvelles chansons dedans. Enregistré en binôme avec Dennis Leeflang (batterie, ex-Sun Caged), Thal s’est chargé de tous les instruments sauf la batterie.

Le titre éponyme annonce la couleur générale de l’album : une espèce de rock festif flirtant avec le punk sur des titres comme «Real», «The Color Of Justice», «More» ou «Life Inside Your Ass» mais aussi avec la pop survitaminée à l’écoute de «Rockstar For A Day», «Pretty Ugly» et «Overloaded». Autant de styles musicaux sur lesquels Ron Thal fait montre de son talent de composition. Cela en paraît presque facile. Or, le challenge n’est pas dans la composition de ces titres car on avait déjà sur Uncool cet improbable mélange entre bossa-nova et fusion hardcore avec quelques plans de guitare suffisamment bien sentis pour renvoyer les apprentis guitar-heroes à leurs études.

En fait, Normal privilégie la vitesse car certains titres déboulent pied au plancher. Mais il est agréable néanmoins de trouver des moments de calme comme les deux titres mid tempo «Breaking» et «Awake» pas exempts pour autant de sweeping, tapping et autres techniques de guitare. Le seul véritable ovni de l’album est donc «Shadow» (dont l’intro accuse un net cousinage avec «Wight is Wight» de Michel Delpech, si si !) sur lequel l’influence de Jimi Hendrix et Queen se fait sentir.

Un tour de force réussi pour Ron Thal qui a décidé de se remettre à jouer plus sérieusement. Car là où Uncool décevait par son manque de technique, Normal est plus mature grâce à cet habile mélange entre chanson et technique. Et c’est cela qu’on aime !

Ron Thal is back. After “Uncool” a little disappointing to some guitarists because it was not focused on hallucinating guitar riffs, and “9.11” which looked like a melting pot, the New-Yorker returns with a new album, a real one, with all new songs. Recorded with Dennis Leeflang (drummer, ex-Sun Caged), Thal did all the instruments except for drums.

The self-titled track (Normal) illustrates the general color of the album : a sort of party rock flirting with punk (“Real,” “The Color of Justice,” “More” or “Life Inside Your Ass”) but also with acid pop (“Rockstar For a Day,” “Pretty Ugly” and “Overloaded.”) Blending musical styles, Ron Thal shows his talent as a composer. It almost sounds easy. However, the challenge is not in the composition of these titles because we had already seen in “Uncool” the improbable mix between bossa-nova and fusion hardcore, with a few guitar riffs with enough feeling to send back apprentice guitar-heroes back to their studies.

Actually, Normal focuses on speed as a few titles run as fast as they can. But it is nice to find a few moments of calm like with the two mid tempo titles “Breaking” and “Awake,” though still containing sweepings, tapping and other guitar techniques. The only real UFO of the album is “Shadow” (which has an intro baring similarities with « Wight is Wight » from Michel Delpech, I swear !) where the influence of Jimi Hendrix and Queen is felt.

A “tour de force” succeeded for Ron Thal who decided to go back to playing seriously. Because where “Uncool” disappointed guitarists because of its lack of focus on technique, Normal is more mature thanks to this fine mix between song writing and technique. And that’s what we like !
