1) Why have you the habit of being paid in Sushi?

Because money doesn't taste very good when you dip it in soy sauce.

2) What's the reason why you decided to change your name in Bumblefoot?

I didn't really change my name, it's just that a lot of people knew me as "Bumblefoot" and not as "Ron Thal."  Also, there are no "Ron Thal" CDs available, but there are "Bumblefoot" records available.  There was some confusion between the two and I had to make a choice, and commit to who I'm going to be - Ron, the human, or Bumblefoot the flying foot.  Maybe I made the wrong choice...? 

3) Is the guitar an inspiration source or simply a means by which you express your inspiration?

It is a means of expression.  The guitar is a painter's paintbrush, know what I mean?  You can love the physical act of painting, but the art you make comes from inside you, not from the paintbrush.  I don't know if other guitarists would agree with this, it's just my own feeling about it...

4) How do you manage to be the reincarnation of Tom Jones if Tom Jones is still alive?

Cloning.   I was created in a lab from a piece of skin picked off his back that someone found in a hotel bathroom sink in Las Vegas, 1969.

5) What do you think about Majors?

Um, they sound happier than minors....?  Not sure what you're talking about there, monkey-tits.

Majors - big music labels...

Oooooooooooooooooooooooh, major labels!  I think the music industry doesn't function properly - it's a flawed system and it won't last, unless changes are made. Artists can survive without labels - labels can't survive without artists. The internet has made a way for independent musicians to get their music heard, without having to sell their souls to the music industry.   It's fantastic.

6) Who killed Laura Palmer?

Bob.  Followed by the ABC network.

7) Who shot Mr. Burns?

8) Which are your favorite bands?

The Beatles.   Also the Four Tops - no other band stayed together for 50 years without changing a band member.  One band member died a few years back and they changed their name to the Tops out of respect for the original.  It's beautiful.

9) More specifically, which are the three cds you would take with you in a deserted island?

Only three?  hmmmmmmmmmmm...    ok, I'll say Manowar "Battle Hymns," Beatles "Magical Mystery Tour" and Stevie Wonder's Greatest Hits.  But the list will be different by tomorrow...

10) ..And will you remember to take along with you the cd player too in the deserted island, to play them?

I'd probably forget   :P

11) After a hand-shaped guitar, another one with bee wings and a Swiss cheese one too, what will we deserve in the future?

12) Why a Coolclub reader should buy one of your cds instead of buying the last Britney Spears' ?

They shouldn't.  My CDs are full of stupid guitar noises and bad lyrics...    Britney Spears' CDs have pictures of Britney Spears.    I'd definitely get the Britney Spears CD instead...

13) In your opinion, why you are so popular in France and not so popular in other countries (such as Italy)?

Because the French have poor taste.  Fucking French....     no, it's because it was one of the only countries that licensed my CDs to their retail stores.  I prefer internet distro - with internet stores you get to hear sound samples, get info about the CD, and it's a better price.  As downloading speeds and wireless internet connections improve and become more available, all albums may end up as downloads.   It will be interesting to see how that affects the sale of albums, when every song will be available individually...

14) What's the secret of happiness?

I don't know if there really is a secret.  What I've learned is that you can't change anything that happens, only your reaction to it.  You have to *choose* happiness over anger and hatred.

15) ..And the one of immortality?

Create something that will outlive your own body.   Add something positive to the world.  A work of art, a good family, something to improve the life of the people around you. 

16) Which is the meaning and the story of the name of your band?

Years ago I was helping my girlfriend study to be a veterinarian and came across a disease called "bumblefoot" - it was a disease that caged animals get, and one of the treatments for it is to rub hemorrhoid cream on their feet.  I was so touched and moved, it was a great epiphany, like a blind man seeing his own face for the first time.  A little more info about Bumblefoot:

Ulcerative pododermatitis, also known as bumblefoot, is an inflamation of the balls of the feet of birds, guinea pigs, rabbits, and rats. The inflamation is usually caused by infection with Staphylococcus aureaus, but may be caused by other bacteria. The infection occurs when the bacteria contacts broken skin, such as a wound or abrasion, on the foot. Rats can get abbrasions on their feet from walking on wire cage flooring or rough textured cage litter. 

Bumblefoot usually appears first as a small, reddish bump or lump on the foot. It can look similar to a corn or callous you see on human feet. Inside the lump is a closed abcess. In progressed stages the lumps grow large and can break open and bleed.

The best treatment for bumblefoot in rats is a combination of a systemic antibiotic (Cefa Drops) and topical applications of an antiseptic/disinfectant, (Dr. Naylor BLU-KOTE). Some people have seen faster improvement by cleansing the feet with chlorhexidine, an antiseptic/disinfectant solution, between BLU-KOTE applications.

The best prevention against bumblefoot is a clean, disinfected cage with solid surface floors and soft cage litter.

17) What do you think about Italian girls?

Most of my past girlfriends were Italian.  Although I don't know if Italian girls from NY count, do they?  I only know a few women from Italy, and they're all damn sexy...

 Nel numero di aprile di CoolClub avevo realizzato un articolo sui Bumblefoot, un gruppo americano da me molto amato, ed ora vi propongo un’intervista realizzata dal sottoscritto proprio a Ron Thal, chitarrista e cantante dei Bumblefoot, grazie al potere di internet e soprattutto alla sua estrema disponibilità
Ciao Ron, partiamo subito con una domanda che scaturisce da una curiosità che ti riguarda: perché sei solito farti pagare - per i tuoi servigi musicali - in Sushi anziché in denaro contante?
Perché il denaro contante non ha un buon sapore quando viene intinto nella salsa di soia.
È notizia recente che tu abbia messo in cantiere il tuo vero nome (Ron Thal) tenendoci al fatto che ti si chiami Bumblefoot. Da cosa deriva l'idea di farti chiamare col nome del tuo gruppo?
Non ho realmente cambiato il mio nome, è che molte persone mi conoscevano come Bumblefoot e non come Ron Thal; inoltre, non ci sono sul mercato cd di Ron Thal ma cd dei Bumblefoot. C’era una certa confusione tra i due nomi e dovevo quindi prendere una decisione, scegliendo di essere “Ron l’umano” oppure “Bumblefoot il piede volante”. Ho fatto forse la scelta sbagliata?
Secondo me sì.. Cambiando argomento, sei apprezzatissimo come strumentista per le tue doti eccezionali di originalità, perizia tecnica e gusto: la chitarra per te è fonte di ispirazione o solo uno strumento per concretizzare la tua ispirazione?
La chitarra è un mezzo di espressione. E’ come il pennello per un pittore, non so se mi spiego: si può amare l’atto fisico del dipingere, ma l’arte che realizzi viene da dentro di te, non dal pennello. Non so se altri chitarristi sarebbero d’accordo, si tratta solo del mio punto di vista..
Qualcuno, riferendosi alla duttilità della tua interpretazione vocale, ti ha presentato come la reincarnazione di Tom Jones. Come fai ad essere la reincarnazione di Tom Jones se Tom Jones non è ancora morto?
La risposta è nella clonazione. Sono stato creato in laboratorio da un pezzo di pelle della sua chiappa, rinvenuto nel lavandino del bagno di un albergo a Las Vegas nel 1969.
Cosa pensi delle case discografiche, in particolare delle major?
Si è instaurato un sistema destinato prima o poi a sfaldarsi, per il fatto che mentre gli artisti esistono anche in assenza di case discografiche, le case discografiche non possono esistere senza gli artisti; un giorno o l’altro (magari con l’ausilio delle recenti vie di distribuzione diretta tramite internet) il meccanismo perverso di profitti messo in piedi dalle case discografiche potrebbe cominciare a vacillare.
Chi ha ucciso Laura Palmer?
Bob. E subito dopo il network ABC, che non ha più mandato in onda Twin Peaks..
E chi ha sparato al signor Burns?

Certo, il premio per le risposte esatte è la pubblicazione su CoolClub.it! Tornando alla serietà (apparente), quali sono i tuoi gruppi preferiti?
I Beatles. E anche i Four Tops, perché nessun’altra band è mai stata in piedi per cinquant’anni senza mai cambiare un componente. Pochi anni fa uno dei membri dei Four Tops è morto, e loro hanno cambiato il loro nome in Tops per rispetto; mi sembra una cosa bellissima.
Nello specifico, quali tre dischi porteresti con te su un'isola deserta?
Solo tre? Mmm.. ok, diciamo “Battle Hymns” dei Manowar, “Magical Mystery Tour” dei Beatles e il Greatest Hits di Stevie Wonder. Ma il mio elenco già domani potrebbe essere diverso..
E ti ricorderai di portare anche un lettore cd sull'isola insieme ai dischi? (altrimenti come potrai ascoltarli?)
Me ne dimenticherò sicuramente!
Un’altra peculiarità del tuo lato chitarristico è l’utilizzo di strumenti dalle fattezze molto bizzarre: dopo una chitarra a forma di mano, una con le ali da ape e un'altra con la sembianza del formaggio svizzero, cosa ci riserverà il futuro?
Non dimenticare la chitarra senza tasti! Quale sarà la prossima? Ottima domanda.. penso che dovremmo chiedere al signor Vigier (www.vigierguitars.com).
Perché un lettore di Coolclub dovrebbe comprare un tuo disco anziché acquistare l'ultimo di Britney Spears?
Non dovrebbe fare una cosa del genere, infatti. I miei cd sono zeppi di stupidi rumori chitarristici e cattivi testi; i cd di Britney Spears invece hanno le foto di Britney Spears all’interno. Personalmente, se dovessi scegliere, io acquisterei senza alcuna esitazione i cd di Britney Spears.
Qual è il motivo della vostra popolarità in Francia e del fatto che invece in altri paesi, come l'Italia, molti vi ignorano totalmente?
I francesi hanno dei pessimi gusti. Maledetti francesi.. A parte gli scherzi, il motivo va scovato nel fatto che la Francia è uno dei pochi paesi che ha permesso la vendita al dettaglio nei negozi dei cd dei Bumblefoot. Io preferisco la distribuzione tramite internet: tramite i negozi virtuali è possibile ascoltare in anteprima spezzoni del cd, ottenere informazioni sul disco e avere dei prezzi più convenienti. Con il graduale miglioramento delle tecnologie di connessione e, di conseguenza, della velocità di connessione, la vendita di un album potrebbe identificarsi in un’operazione di download: allora sarà interessante verificare come cioè potrà eventualmente inficiare il significato tradizionale di un album, dal momento che le singole canzoni potranno essere fruite separatamente ed isolatamente dalla consueta unità concettuale di un disco.
Qual è secondo te il segreto della felicità?
Non so se c’è davvero un segreto. Ciò che io ho imparato è che non si può cambiare niente di ciò che è accaduto, ma si può cambiare solo la propria reazione a ciò che è accaduto; si può quindi scegliere la felicità in luogo della rabbia e dell’odio.
..e il segreto dell'immortalità?
Il segreto è creare qualcosa che sopravviverà al proprio corpo, aggiungere qualcosa di positivo al mondo, sia esso un’opera d’arte, una famiglia, o qualcosa che migliori la vita delle persone vicine.
Qual è il significato del nome del vostro gruppo?
Anni fa stavo aiutando la mia ragazza per un esame di veterinaria e mi sono imbattuto in una malattia animale chiamata appunto “bumblefoot”, contratta dagli animali che vivono nelle gabbie (uccelli, criceti, conigli..), per la quale uno dei rimedi è strofinare i piedi dell’animale malato con della crema per emorroidi. Sono stato così commosso dalla questione che sentivo di aver avuto un’illuminazione, come un cieco che per la prima volta avesse visto il proprio volto.
Cosa ne pensi delle ragazze italiane?
La maggior parte delle mie fidanzate sono state italiane, sebbene non so se valgano per tale conteggio le ragazze italiane di New York.. in realtà conosco poche donne italiane, ma sono tutte dannatamente sensuali.
Qual è l’ultimo disco che hai ascoltato?
"The Love Below" degli Outkast.
